Butterfly Basics - Joel Dunnette
April Chapter Meeting

Joel Dunnette is a Minnesota Master Naturalist with a passion for butterflies. He will speak on "Butterfly Basics," showing several kinds we see in southeast Minnesota. He will explain their life cycles. Joel feels that what we plant in our yards and neighborhoods can make a big difference to these beautiful creatures. Joel is a past president of the Minnesota Native Plant Society and has been active in the Prairie Enthusiasts. Living in Bryon, Minnesota, Joel is our most distant member. Joel has led groups in the Iron Horse Prairie in Hayfield, Minnesota and presented many programs at Whitewater State Park. Joel is quite an authority on our natural environment.

Woodland Wildflower Walk - Nancy Pumper

Nancy Pumper has a background in naturalism and led her church teenagers into the Boundary Waters for many years. This year, Nancy will take you into Hauberg woods and point out the beautiful flowers that grow in it. Trilliums, Jack-in-the-Pulpits, Bellwort, Wild Ginger, and numerous other flowers as well as ferns and sedges will be examined. Nancy is quick to point out why they are growing in their particular habitat. Nancy's family has a large acreage near Brainerd where she has many flowers such as trilliums and orchids that grow on her land as well as in the area around it.

Fundraiser for Northfield Prairie Partners Chapter of Wild Ones
Friday, May 10th, 12:00 Noon - 7:00 pm
Saturday, May 11th, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
414 Manitou Street, Northfield, Minnesota 55057
Our Northfield Prairie Partners will do their main fundraiser on the driveway and garage of Arlene Kjar's home. All are encouraged to participate in some way. Collect items that we can sell, no electrical appliances, and price ahead of time. We will change the price if we feel it needs to be different. Deliver from Monday - Thursday. Pot plants ahead of time so they look nice. We'll have a separate place for native and non-native plants. Birdhouses, feeders, clothing, shoes, crafts, dishes, toys, and the usual garage sale items sell well. Strawberries, rhubarb, raspberries, and of course heirloom tomatoes are popular. Deliver tables on the 5th.

Walk Through a Native Prairie - Nancy Braker and Bonnie Harper Lore

Nancy and Bonnie will lead us on a walk through McKnight Prairie which is on a mesa near Stanton, Minnesota. It has never been farmed and has solis that are very unique to this area. many rare plants are found in the preserve. Nancy Braker is the Director of Cowling Arboretum at Carleton College. Bonnie Harper Lore is a writer and member of Wild Ones. A map can be found on the Carleton College McKnight Prairie web page.
