At Bluestem Farm we draw on our more than 30 years of involvement with restoration work to grow high quality, diverse, local ecotype plants and seeds for landscaping and restoration work. Most of our genetics come from Sauk, Dane, Columbia, and Iowa counties in southern Wisconsin. We are also happy to do custom propagation. We try to maintain a small ecological footprint and encourage others to do likewise by choosing plants for their conditions rather than attempting to alter conditions to suit the chosen plants. We sell our plants at the Dane County Farmers Market, and limited hours on the farm. We do not ship plants.

Formecology, LLC is a full service landscape design, installation, and care firm focusing on regionally inspired and sustainable outdoor living environments for residential and commercial settings. “Formecology” is born from the idea of combining art with nature: bringing natural elements together with cultural art forms to create landscapes that are appropriate both to nature and site architecture. Our training and experience in landscape architecture helps us to create a thoughtful vision that artistically integrates native plants and local materials in an inherently eco-friendly way. Outdoor living environments designed, installed and maintained by Formecology, LLC provide a sustainable and rewarding outdoor lifestyle.
mission is to improve the environment for the benefit of people and the natural community. We are experts in native plants and the ecology of natural areas and we use this knowledge to create beautiful native landscapes and restore natural areas to a more pristine condition. Our primary background is in natural areas restoration, a discipline in which we work to rehabilitate damaged ecosystems so these wonderful places and the wildlife that live in them can thrive and be enjoyed far into the future. But these remaining natural areas alone are too small and too fragmented to provide enough habitat for our wild plants and animals. Our cities and towns are sterile, with heavily manicured shrubs, high-maintenance annuals and perennials and chemically dependent lawns. By working with us to integrate native plants into our human landscape we can enliven your home, business, and community while giving our wild plants, butterflies, birds and other wildlife a place to live.

Shade-loving woodland wildflowers are our specialty. We have over 25 years experience growing them under artificial shade. Starting with ginseng in the early ‘70s, we branched out into goldenseal, and ultimately into woodland wildflowers native to the forests of the upper Midwest. Our flowers are grown almost entirely from our own stock or from seeds gathered in the woods around our farm. We have been able to amass a nice collection of plants without dislodging the parent sources from their native habitat. We think you will find these nursery-grown plants to be vigorous and well-suited as potted plants for nursery sales, for private landscaping or for commercial restoration projects. We ship bare-root, for overnight or next day delivery primarily in spring or fall, but at other times by request.
Johnson’s Nursery is a full service nursery grower with an extensive line of native Wisconsin woody plants as well as herbaceous forbs and grasses. The nursery prides itself on having a knowledgeable staff that can help clients of all levels of expertise have successful landscaping projects. The ever popular Johnson’s Nursery publication, “Native Plants for Wisconsin Landscapes” is available online at their website or in paper form at the Menomonee Falls location. Each spring the nursery hosts a Native Plant Sale to benefit the three Milwaukee area Wild Ones chapters. It is a must attend event for all Milwaukee area native plant enthusiasts.
