Alpha Nurseries was established in 1999 to supply the conservation, ornamental and Christmas tree markets with a wide variety of bare root planting material. Almost all of our products are produced from seed, collected mostly from wild stands. We grow 220 species of (mostly woody) plants, marketing these throughout the northern US. The nursery is set along the dunes of the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. The area is famous throughout the county for providing a great growing medium to produce high quality root systems. The coarse soil structure allows for a very high percentage of the secondary and hair roots to be harvested in the digging process. This translates into higher survivability and diminished transplant shock for our customers.

Most of our plants are used to establish native ecosystems in rural areas and often in residential applications. Our customers range from farmers in South Dakota planting into a CRP project, Christmas tree plantations in New York, internet retail companies, to ornamental nurseries in Ohio. Our products are planted for the landscape markets in Oregon and to protect homes from energy loss in Kansas by establishing windbreaks as well as reforesting the river bottoms of Indiana and Illinois.

If you are interested in planting out woody plant seedlings for any purpose, we probably have a product for you. We are a customer service driven company that works cooperatively to develop new product lines. If you need a certain species propagated for your organization, we would be happy to work with you to give an estimate on what we could do to meet your needs.

Wildtype exclusively grows plants native to Michigan, from Michigan genotypes. We grow trees, shrubs, grasses, wildflowers and emergent wetland plants typical of Michigan woodlands, wetlands and prairies. It is our objective to propagate nursery stock with enough genetic diversity to create self-sustaining populations. Therefore, the vast majority of our plants are grown from wild seed stock. This is what we mean when we say our plants are borne to be wild. Wildtype also provides ecological design and consulting services for public, commercial and residential projects focusing on restoration and preservation of native landscape.

Services offered include: species inventory and site assessment; design and planning; and the establishment and management of native landscape. Please contact us for more information.
